You must make sure that your fence is of a legal design and all parts of the fence are within your property boundaries,
this includes any footers that you set the fence posts into.

To make sure your fence meets the regulations, visit your municipality’s building code inspector office. Some areas are very strict about height and appearance, while others have no rules at all. Every area is different, so you must check for yourself. Simply looking around the neighborhood is not accurate. Many may be in violation or the fence was built before the current fence rules were enacted.

To get within your legal bounds, you need to find your property pins. A metal detector is usually the best way to find them. If you are not certain that you have found them, call a surveyor for assistance. This is a simple job for surveyors, so there is a chance that you can find one moonlighting on the weekends for extra money.

Again, this is the most important step of the fence process. Get this wrong, you may have to tear down the fence and start over. My surveyor’s crew spent almost 2 hours marking my yard’s boundaries and the pins were very easy to find. Expect a thorough job and ask as many questions as you want.

The next step is to install the fence posts.
