Build A Fence Gate
Two main types of gates are the single gate and the double gate. Both can be built and installed easily and the hardware is available at your local hardware store. I was shocked when I noticed the prices, so be prepared. Most shocking was the L brackets and you really need them for this type of gate build. If you find L brackets cheap or a plan to build the gates without them, by all means do it. At $4- $5 each, they add up.

The most common gate is the single gate for walk-though entry. We need to make a frame that will fit in the opening and have enough clearance to swing into place.
Measure the top and bottom of the distance between the fence posts. Adjust for any differences when cutting the top and bottom of the gate’s frame. Subtract the width of the gate frames side pieces and subtract an additional inch to allow enough clearance for the gate to swing into position. Cut the top and bottom to size. Cut your side pieces at the desired height of the gate. Screw the frame together and test the setup where you intend to place your gate.
Create a cross member by measuring the diagonal and cutting the 2×4 to size and adding the 45 degree angles to allow it to fit inside the frame. Screw the cross-member into place and attach L-Brackets to every corner of the frame.
Install the hinge hardware on the frame. Haven an assistant help you position the gate frame so that you can now mark the spots where the matching hardware can be mounted to the post. Mount the hardware in the correct position on the post and attach the gate frame. Attach the latch hardware to the frame and line up the matching hinge hardware to the fence post. Mount and test.
