Shovel

A shovel is good for starting do dig your fence post and moving the dirt after the hole is dug. Fiberglass handles are a good feature to have if you want long life from your shovel.

Wire Cutters For Fence

Wire cutters are used to cut the vinyl coated wire mesh fencing material when building a cheap fence. Quality is important. The fencing material is not hard to cut, but you will be making many cuts. Cheap wire cutters may not hold up to the job.

Reciprocating Saw Is Handy When Building A Fence

Reciprocating Saws, sometimes referred to as a saws-all, are handy for cutting the 4×4 treated posts. They can get the job done just a little easier than the circular saw. Reciprocating saws are also good if you decide to top your fence posts with a 45 degree angle cut.

The reciprocating saws advantage is that a long blade can cut through thick wood quicker and it can do it with one good cut.

Chalk Line And Chalk For Plotting Post Holes And Marking Fence Posts

Chalk lines are used to help stake out your fence posts locations and keep your post holes in a straight line. Chalk lines can also be used to mark approximately where you should place your fence rails.

Saw Horses For Sawing Your Fence Posts And Rails

Save your pickup truck bed or picnic table and do the job right. Get 2 saw horses to lay your wood on before you measure and cut. Saw horses are cheap if you nick one with a saw blade.

Saw horses can come a pre-assembled  or you can buy just the brackets and make your own out of 2 x 4 lumber. Many pre-assembled saw horses are very light weight and they fold up flat for easy storage. Saw horses made from brackets and 2 x4′s tend to be heavy and hard to store.

Circular Saw For Cutting Rails and Fence Posts

Circular saws are required for cutting the fence posts and rails. A hand saw is not going to be able to efficiently cut through the heavy treated wood as it will either wear you or the saw blade out quickly. A quality higher voltage saw is suggested for building fences.

Crescent Wrench For Building A Fence

A Crescent wrench is the brand name for an adjustable wrench. The wrench easily adjust to any size nut or bolt. You may substitute this with a socket or wrench set, but most of the work required to build a cheap fence can be done with an adjustable wrench.

Tape Measure For Building A Fence

A good long tape measure is a definite requirement for building a fence. The longer the better. You may even want 2; a short one for building the gate and a long one for measuring out your rails and post holes. Quality tape measures are worth the money as a cheap one will bend. A bent tape measure is worthless, so buy quality.

Drill With Attachments For Screws

A standard hand drill with good power is required to screw the fence rails to the posts and for the construction of a gate. If you use a rechargable, you are going to need a very high powered drill. The treated wood that the fence posts are made of require a large screw and much force to drive the screws. Small drills may not be up to the duty. Electric cord drills tend to have much greater power so stick with these if a power supply is available.

Don’t Forget The Driver Set

A driver set will be needed to convert the drill into a powered screw driver. I suggest a high quality set because of the high amount of force used to drive the screws into treated wood.

Long Contractor Level To Make Fence Rails Level

A long level will ensure that your rails are level to maintain uniformity on the fence line. Absolute accuracy is not a must, but the better job you do checking, the better the fence’s appearance will be when complete.

At least a 36 inch long level is best, but the longer you use, the more accuracy you will have and the easier the job will be. The level of quality is more of a personal budget preference for this job.
